In the summers of 1916, 1917 and 1918, the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp and his secretary Maud Karpeles made trips into the Appalachian Mountains to seek old British ballads that had been carried there by emigrants 150 years earlier and still survived vigorously in oral tradition. They noted down over 1600 songs, many of which were published in the book English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, Vol 1 and English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians, Vol 2.

Brian Peters sings and plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle (8, 16), and anglo-concertina. Jeff Davis sings and plays banjo, fiddle, mando-cello, jaw's harp and spoons.
